The Fraser clinic is a child clinic aimed at combating minor curable illn
esses, diseases and inoculations. The clinic will be situated in the Nakuru district next to the Kia-Murogi slum. The aim is to offer affordable care to children within the slum.
This clinic is a necessity for so many children as the clinic available to the slum is undercontinuous stress this is due to the poor living conditions and abject poverty in the slum leading to a higher chance of disease. Approximately 150,000 people in Nakuru live in low income settlements or informal settlement, that’s half of the 4th largest town in Kenya. While 50% are living below the poverty line and some of these on less than $1 a day. What have the children of Kia-Murogi done to deserve such poor conditions?
They need help, and with our clinic they’ll receive it. We will begin with offering the children of Kia-Murogi practical and simple aid such as: HIV treatment, malaria immunization and the curing of minor injuries such as a cut from some protruding wire that if left untreated could lead to a major infection. Our method is preventative and lifesaving as we aim to help offer these children a good quality of life and an opportunity to live a less fearful existence. If they play and fall it won’t mean an infection, they can live the life every child deserves.
The Inspiration
Heart for the City has always had strong affiliations with the slum of Kia-Murogi. Lukas and Simon Njenga (the visionaries of the projects) grew up in the hard conditions of Kia-Murogi with their family and 10 other siblings. Once leaving the poor conditions they vowed to give others a better standard of living and the opportunity to go on and live the life they want to lead. Heart for the City has already begun work on schooling in Nakuru, (see St. Monicah primary school) and a clinic is the next step in offering children in Kia-Murogi hope.
The Fraser clinic is named after Pastor Fraser Ogston a Glaswegian with a long history of aid in Kenya, he opened his heart to the Njenga family and helped them to come to the UK. The clinic is a sign of the admiration that we at Heart for the City has for Fraser, clinic will be set up in honour of him as we hope to embody the faith and kindness that Fraser has spread to everyone he has met.
